‘Of Mice and Men’...exploring the ideas

On Friday 5th October the year eights experienced an ‘Of Mice and Men’ workshop. ‘Of Mice and Men’ is our class book and is about two men trying to achieve ‘The American Dream’. It is a very interesting book and I think I speak for the majority when I say that it is also very enjoyable.

The first thing that we did when we got in the hall was find a partner and walk around in a specific way. When we walked around, the leader of the workshop shouted something to do, such as tend the rabbits. We then had to find our partner and we had 10 seconds to get into a position that represented what he said and then freeze. The things that he said were all about ‘Of Mice and Men’.

After this, we got a sheet of paper and a pen. The leader of the workshop asked us imaginative things about the book, such as which celebrities should play the main characters and we had to write that down.  After we wrote it down, we got up and danced to some fun songs, until the music stopped and we answered more questions. It was full of laughter and some people came up with some very interesting answers.

Once we had our break, we came back and wrote a script. The script was about a conflict that happened in ‘Of Mice and Men’ and it could be a person vs person conflict, a self-conflict, a self vs society conflict or a self vs fate conflict. It was fun acting them out and watching other peoples.

The workshop was a brilliant experience and all of the year eights would like to say a big thank you.
