Great North Exhibition...GEMS Style
The Great North Exhibition is being held this summer. It is an event in which music, history, art and the whole of the culture and achievements of the North is celebrated. It is brilliant to live in the North East and the Festival of the North is an opportunity to remember how much they appreciate everything our region has contributed to the development of the arts, of science, of industry. It is also a chance to show to the rest of the country, the rest of the world in fact, everything that it means to be a Geordie.

In school, we also celebrated the North East by creating and then displaying pieces of work to do with the North East and its brilliance; we created our own Festival of the North. Every student in GEMS spent a lot of time and effort on a piece of work to do with the North East. The deadline to hand it in was Friday 27th April. Mrs Cheape was amazed by the amount of effort put into all the pieces of work and by the level and range of skills shown; she had previously cancelled all other homework except English and Maths, which made everybody very happy.
On Friday the 4th May, there was an open afternoon, so everybody’s family could see the effort that everybody had put in, and it was a brilliant opportunity to come together to celebrate the North East. A big thank you to everybody in GEMS who completed a fantastic piece of work, and big thanks to Mrs Cheape and the teachers for organising this brilliant event. Also for reading and displaying every single piece of work (that’s about 500 pieces !!!)
Although it was hard to pick out winners, some students have been commended for their outstanding contribution to the Festival. They are:
Steve who won a surfing lesson; Rafia and Samaha who both won Alnwick Garden tickets; Joe the winner of Gibside tickets; Hannah the winner of a Year's pass to Crook Hall.
One of our talented winners, Steve, has devised a way to raise more money for the school, at the summer fair. He is going to create another art masterpiece, different to the one he previously created and won with. We are then going to raffle it at the school fair. He has done this because his painting has been particularly popular and could have been sold several times over! A young entrepreneur in the making…
