I felt very lucky when I found out I was going to visit ‘Daft as a Brush’. As a part of school council, I was curious to find out more and, personally, very excited to arrive. Welcoming us to his environment, Bernie, who is the manager and creator of ‘Daft as a Brush’, helped gather the two pupils from each North East school.

As we sat down, Bernie told us lots of information about ‘Daft as a Brush’ that I had never heard before. However, what stood out to me was the fact that Bernie sold his own house to build and move into ‘Daft as a Brush’ charity headquarter’s on the Great North Road. He then employed volunteers that were happy helping for free. The whole idea of ‘Daft as a Brush’ appeared to be about giving and not receiving, about supporting people when they needed it most and about getting together as a team.

After hearing such touching stories, we explored the building, seeing the different rooms that had different purposes. There was a meeting room where volunteers gathered together to discuss issues and rotas. Ambulances were the next surprise. You may have seen them driving in your area- you can’t mistake the bright colours and fun logo.  We got to have a look at some, which had been adopted by different schools and hospitals, including our school.

I had a fun time at ‘Daft as a Brush’ and enjoyed finding out more about the charity.  I felt very grateful that there were many caring people that wanted to help others when they really needed it.
