GEMS’ Visit to the Isle of Arran

This year the Year 8s visited the Isle of Arran and, although we did not enjoy the four and a half hour drive, the beautiful views over the sea to Arran made up for it! We stayed on the north-west side of the island, at Lochranza.

This year the Year 8s visited the Isle of Arran and, although we did not enjoy the four and a half hour drive, the beautiful views over the sea to Arran made up for it! We stayed on the north-west side of the island, at Lochranza.

Each day after our yummy cooked breakfasts, we enjoyed different day-to-day activities like navigating our way through fields and forests using map skills, clambering through rivers whilst testing them in River study, investigating famous caves that Kings once hid in, (The Kings Cave walk), walking up to the peaks of mountains, abseiling off cliffs in climbing skills session and finally testing natural water slides in Gorge walking!

My personal favourite, and I think the majorities favourite day, was our final one. In the morning we enjoyed gorge walking where we waded through mud pools, scrambled up a river, whilst testing one of its natural waterslides and, to top-it-off, we even got to jump off a seven metre high cliff into a pool of freezing cold water! It was brilliant! In the afternoon we enjoyed climbing where we ascended  a ladder and then  abseiled off the top of the twenty-two metre high cliff!

After our delicious tea we ventured out once again to do a variety of night time activities like a night walk where we walked around the beaches and viewed some spectacular sights; we studied some of the wildlife like the seals, starfish, deer and even a basking shark! On our final night we had a camp fire and made our own bread. After these activities we returned to the outdoor centre and enjoyed our free time  playing pool and ping pong in the games room or watching films in the common room. I speak for everyone who visited Arran this year when I say we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would happily go back. So I would like to advise the younger pupils to visit Arran in Year 8 when you get the chance.
