Keeping us Safe

SafetyWorks is an interactive safety centre with several different scenarios to show how many everyday places and objects can be dangerous. All of Year 7 has been to Safety Works. My class (7KW) went with ten people from 7KJ.

SafetyWorks is an interactive safety centre with several different scenarios to show how many everyday places and objects can be dangerous. All of Year 7 has been to Safety Works. My class (7KW) went with ten people from 7KJ.

When we were there, we were split into four carousel groups, each to do a separate activity. The first activity that I did was with the Newcastle Transport Police, and we learnt about the dangers of railway tracks. We then had a tour of a mock police station and even got to see what actual cells look like!

Next we looked at crossing the road safely, with and without traffic lights. We learnt to look right, then left, then right again, because on most roads cars come from the right.

Then, we went to the SafetyWorks Metro Station and were told about how dangerous it can be to stand too close to the edge. Did you know that the electrical sparks from the train wire can jump three metres?

Finally, my group went to learn about the Metro. We played lots of games to do with the Metro, including one called ‘Wavy Gravy’ which involved a quiz.

Before we left we were all given Metro-themed pencils. Overall, SafetyWorks was great fun, with friendly staff and interesting scenarios.
