On the 21st of January 31 Year 8 students took to the sky. We flew over the sea to Grenoble airport in France. The mountains looked like a pixie had sprinkled them with snow, although we were later to realise it was a lot deeper than a sprinkle!
We need pupils to create designs for our new birdboxes to go in the GEMS pond area.
Here are updates on the GEMS Winter Festival, with details of the entry requirements for each category.
In Year 8 during PSHCE lessons we have been raising money for a charity called ‘Cash for Kids’. The aim of the charity is to buy presents for children who would not be getting anything for Christmas.
On the day after Halloween, GEMS threw a disco for the occasion. It was going to be spooky, special and surreal. At 5:00 everybody started arriving in fantastic freaky costumes. It was held in the hall, where a DJ was playing some loud rock songs. These included the “Monster Mash”(very appropriate), “Up Town Funk” and “Macarena”. When these songs came on all the zombies and monsters took to the dance floor and busted some brilliant moves!
On Friday 14th of October the Year 7 and 8s girls’ team and boys’ team took part in a basketball tournament at Northumbria University on the Eagle’s Court. Over all, GEMS team came second though the girls won all of their games.
Year 7 have been busy learning about the importance of being charitable, and decided that as part of their work, they would like to collect items for a local food bank. So each class got busy, and as a result we raised a very generous amount of items that will be delivered to help those who need it most. Thank you so much for your kind donations, I know they will be greatly appreciated.
The Chain of Peace was a gathering of young people, sharing their ideas about peace. As soon as you walked into St Thomas’ church you could see many stunning ‘peaces’ of artwork including our amazing banner, hearts and candle. Katie did an excellent reading infront of many important people including The Mayor of Newcastle and two bishops.
Ellen in 8MR is another GEMS student who is achieving great things. She earned a gold, a silver and a bronze swimming medal in the May Philips Down's Syndrome British Nationals in Rugby last term.
On the 6th of December 2016, KS3 had a treat; an author visit! Philip came in and talked to us for the whole of lesson one. First he told us about how he became an author in the first place. Then he explained how he writes children’s books and which books he has written. Everybody was intrigued and asked lots of questions.
On the 11th of November 2016, in the afternoon, we walked to Gosforth Central for our exciting visit. We were going to meet Robin Stevens. She is the author of the one, the only, Murder Most Unladylike series! This series is absolutely out of this dimension.
On Tuesday 22nd November a small select group of Year 8 students went on a trip to Newcastle University to experience science at its best. The lecture focussed the science of the senses, and we got to see various experiments and investigations.
