Daft as a Brush’ is a very successful cancer transportation charity that works with adults and children around the North East. Cancer is a life threatening illness that can occur to anybody at any time in their lives. More than 1 in 3 people will suffer from cancer and will need treatment, quite frequently. ‘Daft as a Brush’ will be there (free of charge) to transport any possible passengers.
SATs met the year 6s on the week beginning 8th of May and many of the pupils were feeling anxious. If you do not know, SATs are a national set of exams for Year 6s and they petrify some people. The entire year had been preparing for what seemed like ages in English and Maths lessons and sometimes other lessons as well. In registration, there had been tons of revision worksheets handed out and we felt like we had not had a registration with a chance to read for years. (hyperbole - and brackets! With a dash and exclamation mark thrown in for good measure.)
Four talented footballers from GEMS who are part of the Newcastle Schools District Under 13 team, helped achieve an historic victory by winning the Inter-Association Football Trophy. It is the first time that the competition has been won by the Newcastle Under 13 side and 87 years since any Newcastle team brought the trophy to the city.
School will be closed on Thursday 8th June due to the General Election
We have 4 new morning sports clubs starting this term open to both boys and girls.
After half term children and staff will be visiting us from Dandi Experimental School in Shenzhen, China. To welcome them all, we'd like everyone to wear red on the first day back after half-term (Monday, June 5th). It will be non-uniform, but there won't be a charge this time.
GEMS are having a disco on Wednesday June 7th. Tickets are available on ParentPay and from Mrs Skelton.
From Wednesday 8th March to Friday 10th March, over thirty Year 5 children went to Robinwood Activity Centre. The weather was dry and sunny and we all had loads of fun.
Some activities that Year 5 did were Dungeon of Doom, Piranha Pool, Trapeze, Giant Swing and many, many more.
The UKMT (the UK Maths Trust) is an organisation that puts on several different challenges to do with maths each year. Matthew and I went to Heaton Manor to compete in the Junior Team Maths Challenge. We teamed up with Finlay and Jonathan from the high school. They joined us because each team needs two members from Year 8 and two from Year 9
On the 7th of March Peter J Murray came to GEMS to talk to the year 5s and 6s. He talked a bit about the two books he had brought with him they were ‘BONEBRAKER’ and ‘MOONWHAILER.’ He read out an extract of both books to everyone and some children got dressed up and acted the scenes. The next day he brought both books in and children bought them and got bookmarks for free. Peter signed the books people bought and wrote a little message in them.
Once again, we have had our healthy school award renewed for a further 2 years, thanks to all the hard work put in by everyone at GEMS. We have a dedication to keeping our students fit and healthy, and the team who run Healthy Schools Newcastle spoke very highly of the programmes we have in place. These include the sports and fitness clubs, the various residentials, the focus on positive attitudes and self-esteem, our peer mentors training programme, our school nurse provision and our relationships education, to name but a few.
