    Published 22/09/17

One week before the summer fair the school had a non-uniform day on the 23rd of June but instead of bringing in money the Year 5s and 6s had to bring in chocolate and year 7s and 8s had to bring in a bottle. All of these contributions were going to raffles and tombolas at the annual school fair. Some of the great stalls on the day were: Sticky Surprise by 5SL, Tin Can Alley by 6NS, Summer Selfies by 6NG, Nail Bar by 7HC and a lemonade stand.

  • Calling all birds…we’re open for business

    Published 21/09/17

After all of the hard work of designing, sketching and painting the bird boxes were finished and it was time for the official opening ceremony. The winning designers, accompanied by their friends, were also joined by Mr Stout, Mrs Jefferson and governor Mrs Simon. Samaha from Year 6 had the honour of cutting the ribbon since her bird box had been judged the overall winner. As she cut the ribbon she explained her reaction by saying ‘I felt flabbergasted.’

  • All About ‘Daft Day’

    Published 21/09/17

On ‘Daft Day’, we did lots of interesting activities, one of them was dressing in non-uniform but with a twist...we had to dress daft! All at GEMS became VERY daft on ‘Daft Day because of the things that we were wearing (the daft side to everyone’s personality was allowed to break free and some people’s daft side was ridiculously daft! Even though the majority of the children made a fantastic effort, some children had not quite transformed into ‘Dafties’ so extra clothing accessories were provided and soon ‘Daftness’ spread across the entire school. Everybody looked very funny, especially the teachers. Mr Stout dressed to impress but made an incredibly unattractive lady.

  • The Home of Cars (Well, one of them)

    Published 20/09/17

On Monday 12th of June, 6NS travelled to Nissan in Sunderland (the other classes went on later dates) by bus supplied by Nissan themselves- no complicated metro journeys. We started off by getting into 5 teams of 6; red, orange, yellow, green and blue (first 5 colours of the rainbow!) Our 1st task was to create our own car with our partners using the LEGO set they supplied us with, no instructions. Then, we had to show everyone our cars and tell them the name. TOO MUCH PRESSURE!

  • Hitting the Bright Lights of the Capital

    Published 05/09/17

As dawn rose over Newcastle railway station at 8 o’clock in the morning, a group of Year 8 students gathered haphazardly, all waiting for the train to London. Even though there was a three-hour train ride to endure, we were all more hyper than a toddler on Haribo. Some bags were more sizeable than others and some had rather strange items inside! Having eventually arrived in London, we all traipsed into the London Underground station then emerged blinking in the sunlight and into the hot, humid air of the capital. However, we had barely arrived at the hotel when it was time to get moving again. Another short journey on the tube and we arrived at the Natural History Museum.

  • Community Week

    Published 05/09/17

The penultimate week at GEMS is traditionally Curriculum Week when the timetable is collapsed and the year groups mixed so that a theme can be explored in a cross curricular and more flexible, and often more practical, way. This year’s theme was Community. After the tragic events in London and Manchester, it seemed particularly appropriate that we should be thinking about our own community and remembering what makes it so special, so strong and so precious.
