Junior Maths Challenge

On Tuesday 30th April, Year 8s who are in set one for maths , Year 7s who are also in set one for maths and a few set one year 6s, took place in the Junior Maths Challenge. The Junior Maths Challenge is a very demanding test, which is full of long, detailed questions that all carry a lot of marks. Unlike other tests, you can lose marks if you attempt a question and get it wrong. Your mark doesn’t really matter because it’s not like a test that will determine your sets for anything; it’s just a challenge to get your brain thinking… A LOT! It is very hard. Good luck to anybody that takes part. Let’s hope we can get lots of bronze, silver and gold certificates!

Crafternoon Tea

On the 3rd of May, Mrs. Cheape hosted another Crafternoon Tea. Several parents turned up with their kids to have an afternoon of crafting. It gave the GEMS pupils and their parents an opportunity to show off their crafting skills while having fun. There were several things to do; canvas painting, bag painting, decorate a mug, create a hedgehog book and sewing squares. The people who went to the Crafternoon Tea were given tea (obviously), coffee and biscuits while they worked on their crafts and chatted to their family and friends. The Crafternoon tea was, yet again, a success and the people who went had lots of fun and £200 was raised for Love Quilts UK.

The big battery hunt was launched in a KS2 assembly by members of 5SL . We have given out boxes to all of KS2 which we would like them to fill with spent AAA,AA, C and D batteries. The members of 5SL have researched about landfill sites. Land fill sites are not only ugly but can hold up to 4000 elephant’s worth of batteries. They also leak toxic acid into the air causing our planet to be polluted.

After the success of the People, Performance and Peace event last term, some of the performers got the chance to perform their songs and poems one last time. On the second Tuesday of the term (the 30th of April), Mrs. Cheape took several students to Trinity Church to have a half hour of performing.

As most of you know, each year, some lucky Year 8s get to visit London for 2 nights and 3 days. I am going on the trip this year, along with many other people, and I’m sure I speak for everybody when I say… we can’t wait! We go from the 12th-14th of June. In those 3 days, we will go out for an evening meal on both of the nights, have the pleasure of watching 2 theatre shows, go shopping and much more…

A “Major” Part of GEMS Who Will Be Missed: Miss Hodgson retires

A well-known teacher who you all have heard of (Ms Hodgson) is retiring after 31 years working as a music teacher at GEMS. She will be a very big miss to everyone including former students. Everyone will agree when I say that GEMS will not be the same without her.

A Memorable Experience: World War 1 Battlefields

My experience in the battlefields trip was a very touching one. The amount of information that I gained from the trip was exponential as well. The amount of time that I had in Belgium and France was I think the best time I could have had. I didn’t just see the graves and memorials, I stood on the battlefields that hundreds of thousand of men would have fought and died on. It was a very emotional experience in all but the time that really moved me was at he Menin Gate. This was more emotional than the other places we had gone to because my great great grandad would have fought over one hundred years ago about two miles away. I could picture in my mind when the volunteers were playing the last post my great great grandad in a trench with his mates from the Royal Engineers trying to get through another day of the great war.

People, Performance and Peace: A celebration through the Arts

The performance on the evening of the 3rd March was inspired by our trip to the battlefields of Belgium and France and formed part of the Legacy Project a government funded initiative. Legacy Projects are designed to share some of the ideas of the visit and inspire others. If everyone who takes part in one of these visits can impact 110 people through their project, this will represent the number of people killed during World War 1.

Our team (Charlotte, Leila, Johnathan, Samaha, Luke B, Aria, Alex G and Zoe) have been preparing for the big competition on the Saturday 23rd March. We would be competing against many schools in a court room, with our prosecution against their defence and vice versa. A magistrate has come in to guide us and give us a little bit of advice. We ran through the entire procedure and she gave us tip. We are very grateful for her help and as the day is edging closer and closer, we are beginning to get even more excited! We’ve had various meetings, devising questions, analysing the statements and practising for the big day. I think I speak for all of us, when I say… Bring it on!

THE YEAR 7s TRIP TO THE CENTRE FOR LIFE

On the 16th February, 2019 7.1 maths group, led by the wonderful Miss Pink went to the Centre For Life on a visit that involved mind-expanding activities that everyone could (and had to!) participate in including a maths murder mystery and noughts and crosses with a twist!
