Junior Maths Challenge

On Tuesday 30th April, Year 8s who are in set one for maths , Year 7s who are also in set one for maths and a few set one year 6s, took place in the Junior Maths Challenge. The Junior Maths Challenge is a very demanding test, which is full of long, detailed questions that all carry a lot of marks. Unlike other tests, you can lose marks if you attempt a question and get it wrong. Your mark doesn’t really matter because it’s not like a test that will determine your sets for anything; it’s just a challenge to get your brain thinking… A LOT! It is very hard. Good luck to anybody that takes part. Let’s hope we can get lots of bronze, silver and gold certificates!

Crafternoon Tea

On the 3rd of May, Mrs. Cheape hosted another Crafternoon Tea. Several parents turned up with their kids to have an afternoon of crafting. It gave the GEMS pupils and their parents an opportunity to show off their crafting skills while having fun. There were several things to do; canvas painting, bag painting, decorate a mug, create a hedgehog book and sewing squares. The people who went to the Crafternoon Tea were given tea (obviously), coffee and biscuits while they worked on their crafts and chatted to their family and friends. The Crafternoon tea was, yet again, a success and the people who went had lots of fun and £200 was raised for Love Quilts UK.

The big battery hunt was launched in a KS2 assembly by members of 5SL . We have given out boxes to all of KS2 which we would like them to fill with spent AAA,AA, C and D batteries. The members of 5SL have researched about landfill sites. Land fill sites are not only ugly but can hold up to 4000 elephant’s worth of batteries. They also leak toxic acid into the air causing our planet to be polluted.

On the second Tuesday of the term (the 30th of April), Mrs. Cheape took several students to Trinity Church to have a half hour of performing.

As most of you know, each year, some lucky Year 8s get to visit London for 2 nights and 3 days. I am going on the trip this year, along with many other people, and I’m sure I speak for everybody when I say… we can’t wait! We go from the 12th-14th of June. In those 3 days, we will go out for an evening meal on both of the nights, have the pleasure of watching 2 theatre shows, go shopping and much more…

A “Major” Part of GEMS Who Will Be Missed: Miss Hodgson retires

A well-known teacher who you all have heard of (Ms Hodgson) is retiring after 31 years working as a music teacher at GEMS. She will be a very big miss to everyone including former students. Everyone will agree when I say that GEMS will not be the same without her.

A Memorable Experience: World War 1 Battlefields

My experience in the battlefields trip was a very touching one. The amount of information that I gained from the trip was exponential as well. The amount of time that I had in Belgium and France was I think the best time I could have had. I didn’t just see the graves and memorials, I stood on the battlefields that hundreds of thousand of men would have fought and died on. It was a very emotional experience in all but the time that really moved me was at he Menin Gate. This was more emotional than the other places we had gone to because my great great grandad would have fought over one hundred years ago about two miles away. I could picture in my mind when the volunteers were playing the last post my great great grandad in a trench with his mates from the Royal Engineers trying to get through another day of the great war.

People, Performance and Peace: A celebration through the Arts

The performance on the evening of the 3rd March was inspired by our trip to the battlefields of Belgium and France and formed part of the Legacy Project a government funded initiative. Legacy Projects are designed to share some of the ideas of the visit and inspire others. If everyone who takes part in one of these visits can impact 110 people through their project, this will represent the number of people killed during World War 1.

Our team (Charlotte, Leila, Johnathan, Samaha, Luke B, Aria, Alex G and Zoe) have been preparing for the big competition on the Saturday 23rd March. We would be competing against many schools in a court room, with our prosecution against their defence and vice versa. A magistrate has come in to guide us and give us a little bit of advice. We ran through the entire procedure and she gave us tip. We are very grateful for her help and as the day is edging closer and closer, we are beginning to get even more excited! We’ve had various meetings, devising questions, analysing the statements and practising for the big day. I think I speak for all of us, when I say… Bring it on!

THE YEAR 7s TRIP TO THE CENTRE FOR LIFE

On the 16th February, 2019 7.1 maths group, led by the wonderful Miss Pink went to the Centre For Life on a visit that involved mind-expanding activities that everyone could (and had to!) participate in including a maths murder mystery and noughts and crosses with a twist!

Year 5 Derwent Hill Experience

On the 11th of March most of 5ER/SL went to Derwent Hill (an activity centre in Keswick). One of the activities included the Big Swing. In order to do the big swing you would need a harness and a helmet. Once kitted up it was time to head to the giant swing. We arrived at the high ropes and were shown what to do. This is what we had to do: 2 of us had to pull on a green rope which helped the person who was having their go climb up the ladder to reach a platform on a tree. When they got to the top they would sit on a wooden seat then they would swinggggg! Once it was the 2nd persons turn 2 people would have to pull a black rope which would lift the swing itself up to the top of the tree where our team leader (in my case, Zach) would be on the platform waiting to catch the swing. Then the whole process would repeat until everyone had had a turn.

Daft Day

A day in support of Daft as a Brush cancer support charity. We're doing a 'Crazy Bottoms Day'. Pupils can wear skirt/trousers/shorts/socks/tights/shoes of their choice - as daft/crazy as they fancy. They are invited to make a donation to the Daft as a Brush charity, but it isn't obligatory. We are suggesting a donation of £1, but this is just a suggestion.

Dance club is recruiting new members Do you have a free Thursday night? Well, you shouldn’t because you should be at dance club. It is 3:20 until 4:20pm. Steph from Beauty Beats runs dance club and she will always push you to be the best you can be. Everyone who goes loves it so much and it is worthwhile coming. Come on, and give it a try! NO more free Thursday nights, because you’ll be coming to dance club! Bring some dance wear and water, get changed in the gym then make your way down to the hall to DO SOME DANCING! ENJOY!

World Book Day

On Thursday 7th March, all the pupils of GEMS were a part of the annual World Book Day! On this day, pupils dress up as characters from various books. They get to choose and some of the costumes are very extravagant. Last year, one teacher dressed up as Mr Tickle from the Mr Men books! Everybody always enjoys themselves on this day.

Northern Rugby Club Needs GIRLS

Are you going to let the boys have all the fun? At northern rugby club we are recruiting girls. Girl’s rugby takes place on a Friday night at Northern Football Club 6:30 -7:30. All ages welcome. The other day some girls in year 7-8 girls came down and loved it they were absolutely amazing! Some even enjoyed it so much they are now playing at Northern. Recently I have observed that some girls had been playing rugby outside which is great. I have also realised that the numbers at Monday night girls’ rugby has had a rise. Squash Champions

The talented squash players that GEMS has were involved in a National School Squash Competition held in Nottingham. The players who went from year 8 and 6 were Evie P, Zoe S, Mathew M, Ben T, Dylan N, Ava and Kate. They left Newcastle on Tuesday 19th March and came back the next day.

After doing basketball in PE, a team was chosen from the girls and boys in Years 7 and 8. This led onto a competition which was held at the new Eagles Basketball arena on Friday 1st March after school.

It’s coming to that time of the year again, when the year 8s are leaving and starting a new adventure at the high school! This time it’s my turn to leave! As a souvenir of our time at GEMS, Leila, Georgie, Alice, Libby and I are busy making a yearbook. The yearbook will have an interview with Mr Stout, a ‘who is most likely to…’ page, class photos, secrets, individual photos, blank pages for your peer’s signatures and many more exciting pages. It is a really nice memory of the year 8s time at GEMS and can be purchased. It’s very fun to make and we are putting a lot of effort into it. I’m sure it will be the best one yet (not that it’s a competition!)

Careers in the NHS

On the 23^rd of March, the Year 8s had the privilege of watching a show all about the careers they could go into in the NHS. You may think that you can only be a nurse or a doctor but there are many non-medical jobs as well. The show was a very informative and made the Year 8s realise the many and varied opportunities that are available in this massive and crucial organisation.

Environmental Key Project

Our Key group wanted to improve Brockwell Woods. We wanted to make benches, insect hotels and smokescreens.

We gathered sticks to make animal houses and made many animal hotels. We learnt how to make and light a fire. We also chopped branches down on pine trees. We enjoyed most eating our lunch and eating marshmallows. We also found time to play a little game. Jamie was really good because he could run around without falling.

All in all we enjoyed the trip and we hope to do something like it next year; maybe build an animal shelter.

Fair Trade Chocolate Milk During Fair Trade Fortnight

In geography, we had an especially fun lesson, learning about Fair Trade and trying some Fair Trade chocolate milk. We made some posters and bunting to promote the sale. During Tuesday and Wednesday break times, Mrs Donnelly and her helpers sold Fair Trade chocolate milk, for only 30p- bargain, if you ask me!

The profit will go towards buying recycling bins for the school, thanks to Mrs Donnelly’s efforts! Not only this, but the Fair Trade additional cost ensures that farmers get a fair price for their produce. The extra money will help them support their families and have enough money to afford the basics that we often take for granted. A FANTASTIC cause, a FANTASTIC price and a FANTASTIC effect for our school. A win, win, Win!
