People, Performance and Peace: A celebration through the Arts

The  performance on the evening of the 3rd March  was inspired by our trip to the battlefields of Belgium and France and formed part of the Legacy Project a government funded initiative. Legacy Projects are designed  to share some of the ideas of the visit and inspire others. If everyone who takes part in one of these visits can impact 110 people  through their  project, this will represent the number of people killed during World War 1.

In March we visited Belgium and France and the cemeteries and battlefields of Ypres and the Somme. The trip was both inspiring and humbling. The sight of the graves of so many young men, some not much older than us,  reminded us of the importance of peace which is the responsibility of all of us not just world leaders. From 5:30, parents could come in and see the poems, stories and art work all about peace that the GEMS pupil created. There was also a concert from 6:30-7:30. The gymnasts performed their display to The Greatest Showman’s ‘This is Me’, which was sung by Georgia, Ella-Louise and Amelia. Edward played ‘Limbo’ by Ludovico Einaudi on the piano and Charlie played ‘Lied Ohne Worte’ by Felix Mendelssohn also on the piano. Alex and Aria performed ‘Blackbird’ by Lennon-McCartney and ukulele group performed Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’. John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ was performed by Lillie and Alannah.  Several Year 8 girls sang ‘Seasons of Love’ from Rent and four of these girls, Zoe, Eve, Freya and Alice, danced to ‘Rise Up’, choreographed by Holly. There was also a presentation of poetry from pupils from across the years . The whole evening was a huge success and it was a great end to the term.
