Richard Kilty: British sprinter

GEMS were lucky enough to have the opportunity to take part in the Junior Great North Sprint on Friday 9th September. Seven pupils were chosen to sprint 100m to see if they were one of the fastest in our city – Newcastle.

Mr Stout took pupils out of school to the competition: Alice, Eve, Callum, Jack, Luke, AJ and ME (Leila) over the Millennium Bridge and to the nerve-wrecking 100m track.

We were actually the first school to arrive so we started to warm up our shaky legs! When others schools finally came, I saw Richard Kilty (a very famous British sprinter) walk onto the track. Wow!

All the kids were then called up to the track so Richard could give us some tips about starting positions.

The time had come to take to the track. But, luckily for the girls, the boys had to go first (phew)! Callum raced first against a few other schools and he was supported all the way, well 100m! After Callum, Jack, AJ and Luke finished their race it was the girls’ turn.

All the races went AMAZINGLY and Callum and Alice got into the semi-finals but, unfortunately, no one from GEMS got through to the races on Saturday at the Quayside. Overall, it was a great opportunity to feel the heat of intense competition.
