Year 6 Book Club trip to The North East Book Awards
On the evening of 22nd May, 2017, seven Year 6 students and Mrs Lambeth went on a trip to the judging of The North East book awards 2017, held at The Centre for Life. Lots of kids from other schools were there too.
Firstly, we were given the chance to look at the books that were in the competition, before sitting down in the main room to hear about the books from the authors themselves. We had previously read all of the books and voted on which ones we thought were the best. Two of the five authors who had the chance to win were not able to come, so two other authors that came close to being on the list were invited instead.

The five books that could win the competition were; Shadowsmith by Ross Mackenzie, about a boy who is hunted by spiders (that was my favourite); The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell, where a girl is being taught to let animals be wary of humans and fight for themselves; Cogheart by Peter Bunzl, about a clockmaker’s son and a girl called Lily going on adventures; The Goldfish Boy by Lisa Thompson, a about a boy with OCD trying to investigate a missing toddler and The Secret of Nightingale Wood by Lucy Strange, about a girl who goes into the woods and finds witches. The two books that were not in the competition were The Great Chocoplot by Chris Callaghan, where all the world’s chocolate has been stolen and the characters had to find who took it, and Fish Boy by Chloe Daykin, about a boy who is half boy, half fish.
After hearing the talks about the books, we went into the foyer where we could buy the books and get them signed, and there was also a buffet. We were given a five-pound voucher, which allowed us to buy any of the books we wanted for free, as a gift for judging which book was the best. After ten minutes, we went back into the hall to find out what the winning book was.

The Wolf Wilder.
Afterwards, we could buy more books and get them signed. There was a massive queue to buy The Wolf Wilder. Finally, we went back home after the trip, excited to start reading our new books.
In conclusion, it was a really enjoyable evening, and was well worth two hours of our lives. I would recommend all the books there to anyone, as they were all very enjoyable and worth reading.
