National Bird Box Week

National Bird Box Week has been running for over 20 years. It takes place every year between 14th and 21st of February. St Valentine’s Day was chosen this year for the start of National Bird Box week as this is traditionally the time when birds find their mate and pair up for the new breeding season. The aim of Bird Box Week is to encourage people to put up bird  boxes to help the breeding birds and so promote the conservation and diversity of wildlife. Did you know it is estimated that there are about 6 million nest boxes in UK gardens?

Nearly finished!

This year GEMS, led by Mrs Jefferson, decided to take part. A Bird Box Design competition was held with the winners getting to paint their designs onto six bird boxes which will be put up in the school grounds.

Mrs Jefferson was asked if there were many entries. The answer was (of course) yes! Apparently there were stacks. She said that she ran the competition to raise awareness about National Bird Box Week. Our final question to Mrs Jefferson was did she make a bird box? She replied that she made a few simple designs so that everyone would know what it was about.  The winners were:  Dana whose design featured bird related words; Sam who created a camouflage design; Aadil who created some intricate patterns; Megan who was inspired by the seasons; Molly who created a rainbow and Samaha who based her design on a nature quotation by Einstein.

The bird boxes are nearly finished and are looking amazing. Hopefully when people visit they will see what a talented school we are and how much we care about our environment.
