The Winter Festival

To give everyone a chance to demonstrate their creative skills, GEMS organised a special event, the Winter Festival. Before the judging, the pupils of GEMS spent  their own time creating stories, taking pictures, writing and practising plays and songs to showcase the pupils’ fabulous talent.

An original script ... and the playwright

To give everyone a chance to demonstrate their creative skills, GEMS organised a special event, the Winter Festival. Before the judging, the pupils of GEMS spent  their own time creating stories, taking pictures, writing and practising plays and songs to showcase the pupils’ fabulous talent. They worked hard until the event finally came. The children’s stories, scripts and photos were displayed in the hall with the criticism the judges put on them. There were hundreds of entries and the hall was filled with them.

In the afternoon, the parents came in to admire everyone’s work. They were also treated to 4 short plays and some music that pupils had written and composed. The children enjoyed themselves while working on their Winter-themed brilliance and we know the parents had fun as well.

On Monday the 13th of March, the award ceremony took place. The winners weren’t only judged by teachers, but a few Year 8s too helped select winners in KS2. There were lots of certificates handed out, too many to name, but this poem will give you a flavour of the event.

We’ll Have to Postpone

I love the winter and the main reason,
Is that winter is the football season.
Ive trained hard and I feel really fit,
I’ve got amazing new boots and my team’s blue kit.
My phone’s text alert has just rung out,
It’s from the manager…’bring it on!’ I shout.

It’s Sunday morning and I look outside’
It’s raining, it’s lashing, back to bed to hide.
I can hear the sound of the pouring rain’
The rain is beating on my window pane.
Ive just heard the text alert on my phone…
‘The pitch is flooded. We’ll have to postpone.’

It’s Sunday again and I look outside,
It’s sunny and bright, no need to hide.
Wait a minute, what’s that? Is it ice?
It’s sparkly and crackly, it looks quite nice,
I’ve just heard the text alert on my phone…
‘The pitch is too frozen. We’ll have to postpone.’

It’s Sunday AGAIN and it’s silent and bright.
Open my curtains and everything’s white.
Huge flakes of snow, whirl as they fall.
I run downstairs, ‘It’s snowing I call’
I’ve just heard the text alert on my phone…
‘The pitch is too snowy. We’ll have to postpone’.

Oh come on , this weather is just not the best.
I’m ready to play I don’t want to rest.
This winter weather is making me sad,
I just want to play football, is that so bad?
I’m starting  to wonder about the reason,
Why winter is actually the football season.

It’s Sunday morning and the sun is shining.
Maybe I’ll get a game so I’ve stopped whining.
The sky is clear, not a cloud to be seen,
I can’t see any frost, the grass is green.
My phone text alert has just rung out…
At last, game on, ‘BRING IT ON!’ I shout.

By Luke, year 7. Winner in the KS3 poetry section.

The Judges’ comments: We loved this. There was a very strong and personal voice with masterful control of the rhyme scheme and with no sacrificing of sense or meaning. An obvious understanding of whole text structure was evident and used to great effect. Very well done Luke!
