Beak Science

Our year eight scientists designed beaks as part of their study of evolution.

As the rest of YR8 was in London somewhere having fun the science department decided to do an experiment: to design a beak for a certain terrain. This was to help learn about “Natural Selection,” and the task proved difficult as the terrain was specified, but the aspect wasn’t. This meant that you had to design an all round beak that would be able to function everywhere.

The competition was interesting and there was a wide range of solutions, from milk bottles with card, to pencils connected with an elastic band. In other classes there were also some that looked slightly more “beak-like”. Overall it was a lot of fun and very educational. (Plus the M'n'Ms were quite tasty…)
