Recently, classes from Year 7 took part in an amazing Street Science session, with members of Newcastle University, where we did activities based on surviving on a desert island. It was a fun thing to do, and we all enjoyed it.

 

First of all, we did some decoding; we worked in groups or pairs to decode sentences that could give us information on how to escape. We used a Caesar Cipher (a special code) to figure out ways to escape and found it very fun (and confusing!).

 

We also did an activity about the time it would take to cross certain terrain, and which ways that we could escape in the time we had. We used cards which told us the amount of time it would take to cross one square of land.

 

Finally, we designed some dens that would (mostly!) be suitable to live in. We then built them out of limited materials (plastic sheets, lolly sticks, string and tape). It was a fun, practical activity which allowed us to be creative.

 

It was an enjoyable session which we all loved. We would definitely do it again and recommend it to other year groups.
