The ‘saints’ and the class in the cathedral

Year 6 had a visit to Durham Cathedral on the 17^th and 18^th of January.  We went to learn about Christianity in the Anglo-Saxon period, and how it spread around the North East of England.

The first thing we did was look around the Cathedral.  While we looked around, some people got to dress up as: St Aiden, a monk; St King Oswald, a Christian who taught his kingdom about Christianity; St Bede, who translated books into English; St Cuthbert (old and young), who helped spread Christianity and St Hilda, one of the few female saints associated with early Christianity.

After lunch, we went to the gift shop where we saw around an awesome Lego miniature version of the cathedral.  It was so cool.      

Then we went around the cathedral to look for some crosses which we could use as inspiration for our own crosses.  As we walked we learnt more about the different parts of the cathedral before stopping to draw our own cross or, as an alternative, design and draw our own window.

Finally, we hopped back on the coach to go back to school.
